30 Highlighted Cases - Mid-term Project

1 TOIT 2 AGES

Mission & Vision

1Toit2Ages is a Belgian organization created in 2009 promoting intergenerational home sharing. Young and elderly under one roof: an innovative answer to different societal needs.

In fact, many elderly people would like to continue living at home, but feel lonely and need a little practical support. Many students experience difficulties in finding an affordable room in the city where they are studying. Finally, there is a lack of adapted and affordable housing for both elderly people and students on the private and public market. The ultimate goal of 1Toit2Ages is to restore the contact between generations that has been lost and strengthen the social fabric, for the good of society as a whole. In a concrete way, a number of direct societal costs are avoided or reduced, including construction and staffing of retirement homes, student homes & apartments and first line homecare services. The core service of 1Toit2Ages consists of matching of students and elderly people who are interested in this concept, and help to create and follow-up a rental service.

DIGITAL KIDS

Mission & Vision

Digital Kids is a programming course for children: 8 to 14 years. Children discover programming languages such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, how to build a website or an app.

In Romania we have many issues in the public system: a decrease in the quality of teaching, high drop out rates, lower results in international tests, outdated curricula, therefore the role of the civil society and private sector is important. They can represent an alternative, build schools, support extracurricular activities, participate in public policies debates, offer internship opportunities. A strong private investment in education can also put pressure on the public system for it to improve and adapt. This is not the case yet in Romania, where only about 2% of the children are enrolled in a private school.

Digital Kids tackles this challenge by proving to kids that coding is fun and everybody can learn how to program.

Support provided

  • Working and training space incubation: Digital Kids is operationally located in Impact Hub Bucharest, where weekend courses are run. The team considers that access to the premium location has been very important to build parent credibility parents. In turn, this has contributed to stronger word-of-mouth marketing, which has remained the strongest customer aquisition channel throughout the two years of running the initiative.
  • Visibility: through Impact Hub, the Digital Kids program has been showcased in a series of events as guest speakers or best case practice in education. These additional PR opportunities have also contributed to customer aquisition.

Milestones since start into the project

  • Scaling milestones: The Digital Kids program has been successfully expanded to a second city in Romania, through a partnership with a local organization. This represents a pilot step in the process of developing Digital Kids as a franchise.
