ForCommonCause.org allows donors and volunteers to communicate directly with people who are economically disadvantaged to help them build micro-enterprises and liveilhoods.
Social Purpose:
Poverty is one of the most serious problems facing the UK. Three in five British households experienced poverty for at least one year during 1991-2004, and a quarter of public spending goes to social welfare benefits (2011-12). Poverty results in a loss of control, creating interconnected challenges that make it difficult for people to manage their circumstances and fewer resources and options with which to direct their lives. Poverty results in a loss of control, creating interconnected challenges that make it difficult for people to manage their circumstances and fewer resources and options with which to direct their lives. For example, children from low-income households are 2.5 times more likely to suffer chronic illness like asthma, and only 36% of kids entitled to free school meals achieve 5 GCSEs at C or above. Chronic illness results in missed classes, lower graduation rates, and lost income for caretaking parents.
Social Impact:
By creating access to resources, beneficiaries will be more able to trade, increase their income above the poverty line, stay open longer, meet their own needs, manage their circumstances, and create employment and benefit for others.
Innovative Character:
For Common Cause aims to reduce poverty in the UK by helping disadvantaged groups to meet their own needs through self-employment and micro-enterprise. We do this by crowdsourcing and connecting them with the knowledge, networks, funding, equipment and moral support they need to create successful businesses that are able to financially support themselves and others. Through crowdsourcing, we create access to a wider array of resources that people can’t get anywhere else and tackle big challenges like poverty with better results.
