GrowUp Urban Farms Ltd.

GrowUp Urban Farms Ltd.
GrowUp is an urban farming business that produces fresh salads, herbs and fish using a combination of aquaponics and vertical growing technology.
Social Purpose:
The way food is grown now is unsustainable. With a growing population, and over 80% of people expected to live in cities by 2050, innovation in agriculture is needed if we are to develop a socially and environmentally sustainable means of feeding people in cities. GrowUp Urban Farms aims to address some of the fundamental flaws in our global agricultural system by using aquaponic and vertical growing techniques to build farms in cities. By using empty rooftop and brownfield sites in inner-city spaces, our farms create jobs in places that need them, and will need them increasingly in the future as city populations expand. Our aspiration is to employ young people who may have dropped out of formal education or been unable to find employment, and provide them with the skills, experience and confidence to work in urban farming or develop transferable skills to help them move into the area they want to work in. The more farms we build, the more people we can employ, and the more communities in which we can have a positive impact.
Social Impact:
See more info in the attached social impact model. We want to change the production and distribution of nutritious food which is consumed in cities. We aim to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture, employ local people so cities can be more selfsustaining, something that will become increasingly important as our climate changes and our cities expand. GrowUp Urban Farms produces sustainable fresh fish, salads and herbs in cities using a combination of aquaponic and vertical growing technologies, creating employment for local young people who have dropped out of formal education in inner city areas and helping cities improve on their food security. Aquaponics is a recirculating soilless system where water is cycled from fish tanks through plants and back into the fish tanks. The plants absorb the waste nutrients in the water, and in turn, filter the water for the fish. By using vertical growing techniques we increase the density at which we can grow crops, thereby maximising our yield per square meter, a necessity in city centres where the price of land is at a premium. Our farms are designed for growing local and sustainable food in cities. We grow for both retail and wholesale customers. Founded at the start of 2013 by Kate Hofman and Tom Webster, GrowUp aims to become the market leader in commercial aquaponic urban farming in the UK.

Our core strength is the fact that we offer two qualities in our approach to growing food that should be fundamental to feeding people: freshness and sustainability. Around this core, there are several other attributes, which add to our strengths. Our product is suitable for both wholesale and retail markets, of which London has extensive and varied options. Furthermore a number of our products have opportunities for value-add such as smoked fish and vacuum-packed herbs. We will provide excellent customer service, maintaining close relationships with the chefs who buy our produce and we have an unusual degree of control over our supply chain. To start with, we will only have a small market presence and our brand will have to build its reputation, whilst shouting loud enough to compete with the other innumerable fresh produce growers selling into London. Evidence of our marketing success can be seen through our Pinterest site, which highlights GrowUp’s online coverage.
